The New Mercedes-AMG E53 Is More Powerful Than Ever

The new Mercedes-AMG E-Class isn’t just a minor update over its predecessor.

The German brand’s performance sub-brand unveiled the 2025 AMG E53 on Monday morning. The latest version of the four-door is a plug-in hybrid with more power than the previous generation E63. The latest AMG model is based on the new E-Class Hybrid launched last year. Like the current-generation S-Class, it has a sharper three-box body than its electric counterpart, the gelatinous EQE. The new AMG E53 is a more powerful version of the standard E-Class, with a revised front fascia, a more aggressive aerodynamic package and a set of 20-inch alloy wheels (which can be upgraded to 21-inch tires). The interior is almost identical, except for the AMG logo on the dashboard and the MBUX Extended Super Screen option with a 14.3-inch display for the passenger. The model will be available in sedan and sports wagon body styles in Europe, but it is not yet known whether the latter will receive a US version. We’ll get a long-roof version of the standard E-Class, so maybe there’s a chance.

But the most important thing here is the electrified powertrain. The plug-in hybrid system combines a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a powerful electric motor. The mill produces 443 hp. (14 hp more than its predecessor), and the electric motor produces 161 hp, for a total output of 577 hp. and 553 ft-lbs of torque. With significantly more power than previous versions, it’s no surprise that the AMG E53 can achieve impressive figures. Mercedes claims that the sedan will be able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds (the estate can do the same in 3.9 seconds). Its electronically limited top speed is 155 mph, but that figure rises to 174 mph (171 mph for the wagon) if you choose the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

The AMG E53’s engine is powered by a 21.22 kWh battery located under the trunk. Drivers will be able to travel up to 62 miles in ‘electric’ mode, although this estimate was achieved using Europe’s more generous WLTP testing standards. In this mode the speed reaches 87 mph. Mercedes says that when the battery drains, you can restore its capacity from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes using a DC fast charger. It also has a “Battery Hold” mode that allows you to maintain the charge level for further use.

Deliveries of the new AMG E53 sedan are expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. Mercedes has not yet announced how much the model will cost, but it’s likely to be priced north of the outgoing version’s $83,450 starting price. We expect this information to be available closer to release.
